The Top 50 Supermodified Drivers of 2006

Once again I’d like to thank Danny Kapuscinski for all the hard work and time involved in putting together his top 50 super modified drivers of 2006. It’s always interesting every year and thought it’d be cool again to not only have a permanant place for Danny’s writing, but thought that it’d be sharp for everyone to actually be able to see who these drivers are and the supermodifieds they have had their successes with the past season. Once again this year, I was able to use a lot of my own photos from the super modified races I’ve attended, but for a total recap, it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of a lot of others! Lou Anne McKeefrey from the ASA Supermodified series helped out out a ton with getting photos and the word out for those shots that the east coast zoom lense just couldn’t get in sight along with Jim Davidson from www.supermodfiedscorecard.com. , Rick from the ERA Supermodifieds, Rob Rodier from Lane Racing and all those who are listed under each photo the helped with. Without everyone coming together, this recap would not have been possible and just wanted to send a big thanks to everyone for lending a hand!

(This entire section was "stolen" from Pinner's Bar & Grille)
Thanks to Pinner, Danny K and everyone else who helped to make this possible.

#1 Chris Perley (ISMA): 900 pts.
Last Year: #1

Who else would be on top of the list in 2006? For the second year in a row, Chris Perley is the Top50 National Supermodified Driver of the Year. The "Rowley Rocket" only won 10 of 17 ISMA features in 2006, including 6 in a row from June 17 to July 29, on his way to yet another ISMA crown in the Vic Miller #11. In Classic events, Perley took the checkered flag in both legs of the Hy-Miler Weekend in Sandusky, finished 4th in the Star Classic, and was qualified for the Oswego Classic in a Furlong entry but unfortunately left town before the green due to the terrible Classic Weekend weather. Perley also set fast time in Star and Sandusky Classic time trials. Perley ended his dominant campaign with 10 feature wins, and 14 top5 finishes in 17 ISMA features.

#2 Nokie Fornoro (ISMA): 740 pts.
Last Year: #5

Driving the Danny Soule #32, Nokie Fornoro edged even closer to his bid for an ISMA Championship in 2006. Driving all of the 17 events with ISMA in '06, Fornoro won two feature events. His first came at Toledo in June, the other at the year end Thompson World Series. By the end of the season Fornoro had won two feature events, and 11 top5 feature finishes. Fornoro took 3rd in the Sandusky Classic, and 2nd in the Star Classic which was likely the boost he needed to edge past Lou Cicconi. At the end of the season Fornoro finished 2nd in the ISMA point battle.

#3 Lou Cicconi (ISMA): 730 pts.
Last Year: #20

Cicconi ran 18 feature events in 2006, 17 on the ISMA trail with his #75, and also the International Classic behind the wheel of the Graham Racing #92. Were it not for Chris Perley's dominance, Cicconi had a breakout season. He won 2 features with ISMA, the first at Mansfield in August, and the other was the highly coveted 41st running of the Star Classic. His 12 top5 feature finishes with ISMA were second behind only Chris Perley. In the other Classic events, Cicconi shined as well. He finished 5th at Sandusky, and was running solidly in the top5 for much of the Oswego Classic before he made contact with Dave McKnight in the late going. The Aston, PA driver finished 3rd in the ISMA standings.

#4 Mike Lichty (ISMA): 567 pts.
Last Year: #8

Mike Lichty was the iron man of 2006, running the most feature events of all drivers with 19. Last season his teammate Dave McKnight was the iron man with 22 features. Lichty ran all 17 races with the ISMA bunch in '06, ran the International Classic at Oswego, and won his lone feature of the year with the MSA series at Sandusky in October. In all Lichty had one win in 2006 with 8 top5 feature finishes. The Innerkip, ONT pilot finished 5th in the ISMA point battle and finished 5th in the Star Classic, 2nd in both Hy-Miler features at Sandusky, but had a disappointing run in the Oswego Classic after finishing 5th last season.

#5 Dave McKnight (ISMA): 545 pts.
Last Year: #6

Once again behind the wheel of the Lichty Racing #94, Dave McKnight had another solid year on the ISMA trail. Despite not winning a feature event, McKnight came home 7th in the ISMA standings, running 16 events with the travelling winged warriors. despite not winning a feature event, dave ran to 8 top5 feature finishes in 2006. The Lichty #94 finished 9th in the Sandusky Classic, 14th in the Star Classic, and had a tremendous run going in the Oswego Classic before he and Lou Cicconi got together late in the race. McKnight was driving the Syrell #08 in the International.

#6 Charlie Schultz (MSA): 538 pts.
Last Year: #15

In 2006 Schultz made the big move to the May Racing gang, piloting that familiar bright red #7. Schultz finished 3rd in the MSA standings with two wins and six top5 finishes. Both of Charlies victories came in the state of Michigan, the first at Auto City Speedway in July and the other at Dixie Speedway in August. With ISMA Schultz had one top5 finish coming at Mansfield in June. Schultz edged out Shullick by virtue of his start in the Oswego Classic, the first time he had ever competed without a wing. The #7 came home 19th in the final rundown. The May Racing team competed in 16 races in 2006 with Charlie behind the wheel.

#7 Dave Shullick Jr. (MSA): 537 pts.
Last Year: #9
Head shot provided by www.supermodifiedscorecard.com

Dave Shullick Jr. is once again the Midwest Supermodified Champion in 2006 behind the wheel of the Stout Racing #49. Shullick ended the MSA season with eight top5 finishes in nine races with the series including three wins all of which came at the Sandusky Speedway. Shoe 2 ran a total of 15 events in 2006, meaning six of those came on the ISMA tour. Dave ran to a 7th place finish with ISMA in the Sandusky Classic, and a 10th at Mansfield in June. Shullick was barely outdone in the Top50 standings by a fellow MSA competitor.

#8 Mike Ordway (ISMA): 522 pts.
Last Year: #22

In Mike Ordway's final season behind the wheel of the Booth #61, Ordway competed in 12 events but was unable to find victory lane. Mike had four top5 finishes on the ISMA circuit, including a 3rd place finish in the 41st Star Classic. At the Oswego Speedway, Ordway time trialed up front and ran to a fine 2nd place finish in the Oswego Classic.

#9 Bobby Santos (ISMA): 514 pts.
Last Year: N/A

The "Franklin Flash" Bobby Santos, from Franklin, MA is a rising superstar in the world of auto racing and he made his name known once again in the supermodified community. Driving for the Lane Racing team, Santos pulled into Lee USA victory lane in August for his lone win of the season. One win and six top5 finishes were enough to put Santos and the Lane Racing #97 in the 4th spot in the final ISMA standings. Santos also qualified once again for the Oswego Classic, running solidly in the top5 before running out of fuel with less than 10-laps to go.

#10 Troy Regier (WSSRL): 480 pts.
Last Year: #11
Photos by MMRacingphotos.com

Troy Regier and the #98 machine were once again the team to beat on the west coast in 2006. Regier ran 9 events in the WSSRL series, visting victory lane an amazing 7 times! When it was all said and done Regier went on a 7 race win streak to end the season, while finishing in the top5 in every race he competed in on his way to another WSSRL Championship season.

#11 Otto Sitterly (OSW): 480 pts.
Last Year: #18

After the purchase of the Hakwsby Racing Hawk Chassis #2, Sitterly was the man to beat at Oswego in 2006. With his familiar #79 on the side of his mount, Sitterly ran to six feature wins in 10 starts, including the $10,000 to win Mr. Supermodified in August over Joe Gosek in the Snyder Hawk #0. With this run Otto became the 2006 Oswego Speedway Track Champion, the 2nd in a row by a Hawk Chassis. Sitterly also qualified on the outside of the front row for the Oswego Classic, but unfortunately ended his day in the hospital after a horrific crash down the front straight. How is Otto not higher...? Again this system is highly based on competition, and the average car count at Oswego was much lower than that of ISMA.

#12 Justin Belfiore (ISMA): 438 pts
.

Belfiore ran all 17 events with ISMA in 2006, picking up one feature win at Waterford in May. The family owned race team from Ipswich, MA ran to an overall 6th place finish in the '06 ISMA point battle. Belfiore finished 7th in the 41st Star Classic.

#13 Scott Martel (ISMA): 396 pts.
Last Year: #10

Martel picked up the ride in the Budnick #88 after Randy Ritskes injured his wrist early in the season. Scott took the car to a 13th place finish in the year long ISMA battle, running 14 races. Although Martel did not get a win in 2006, he cracked the top5 four times in '06. With Martel behind the wheel the #88 finished 5th the night before the Hy-Miler at Sandusky, then backed it up with a 6th in the 100-lap Sandusky Classic.

#14 Moe Lilje (MSA): 353 pts.
Last Year: #16

Driving the Stout Racing #19, Lilje finished 2nd in the 2006 MSA point standings behind his teammate. Moe got one win this season with the MSA at Toldeo in August, on his way to a total of six top5 finishes on the tour this season. The Vickery, Ohio native ran most of the Ohio races on the ISMA schedule with a finish of 8th at Toldeo in June, and an 8th at Mansfield in August. Lilje ran 14 events in 2006.

#15 Mark Sammut (ISMA): 347 pts.

The London, Ontario pilot ran 15 races in the 2006 season, and just missed the top10 in ISMA points falling 13 points shy of the Lane Racing #9. Sammut continues to impress each year in the Maple Leafed #78, putting together a pretty good year in '06. Mark ran to a 5th place run in front of his home fans at the Delaware Speedway Sept. 29, while collecting a 5th at the season opener in Oswego, and another 5th at Toldeo in June. Sammut missed a couple races on the schedule, had that not happened the consistent Canadian would likely be higher on our list.

#16 Bob Magner (ISMA): 338 pts.

Magner is the other Holbrook Racing driver and pilots the #40 entry. Bob ran 17 ISMA events in 2006 with several good runs, even though he ended the season 9th in the standings just 1 point behind his team car #70. Magner ran to 4 top5 feature runs including a season best 2nd place finish to Chris Perley in the first Twin 30 at Jennerstown in June. The #40 was also impressive at the 41st Star Classic with a nice 8th place run in the 200-lap grind.

#17 Jeff Russell (WSSRL): 327 pts.
Photos by MMRacingphotos.com

Jeff Russell came home 3rd in the WSSRL standings after winning the season opening Vukovich Memorial at Madera on May 6th in his #85. Russell ended the year with 4 top5 runs and 1 win in the #85. He competed in a total of 8 events in 2006, and is still looking for what it takes to knock of Regier and the #98.

#18 Ray Graham (ISMA): 318 pts.
Last Year: N/A

Ray Graham was the man of opportunity in the 2006 season. He provided rides for John Torrese in the early season, but also Steve Gioia III, and Michael Barnes. Graham did a pretty good job himself behind the wheel starting the '06 ISMA season on a tear. He took his Hawk Chassis #90 to a 2nd place finish at the ISMA opener in Oswego, then rode to a 6th at Waterford the following race, and to top it off set fast time at Toldeo the next race with a 9th place finish in the feature event with a 7th the next night in Mansfield. Unfortunately that all came to a crashing halt at Jennerstown in June, and Graham was never really able to recover. Ray ran 15 events between Oswego and ISMA, with a 15th place finish in the ISMA points.

#19 Martin McKeefery (WSSRL): 310 pts.
Last Year: N/A
Photos by Lance Menke Photos

Martin McKeefery is the 2006 National Supermodified Rookie of the Year, ahead of Rob Summers by just 45 points. McKeefery ended the WSSRL season just 8th in points, but ran very well in the big west coast events. In just the second race of the 2006 season McKeefery beat out West Coast dominator Troy Regier for the win in the Diamond Cup feature event at Meridian Speedway. The green #27 machine then ended the season on a high note finishing 3rd and 2nd in the Twin events at Madera to close the season. By the end of the year McKeefery had accumulated 4 top 5's and 1 feature win in just 7 starts during the season.

#20 Bentley Warren (OSW,ISMA): 293 pts.

Bentley Warren continues to make things happen behind the wheel of a racecar. Warren ran 8 events in the 2006 season between the Double Deuce Racing #22 at Oswego, and the back-up Vic Miller entry. Warren ran to a 2nd place at the Thompson World Series, just weeks after winning the Bud ISMA Supernationals at the Oswego Speedway. Bentleys first Oswego win at Oswego occured on Sept. 17, 1966... Ben won the Supernationals on Sept. 17, 2006. Simply Amazing!

#21 Jon Henes (MSA): 292 pts.
Head shot by www.supermodifiedscorecard.com

Jon Henes took the family owned #36 super to a 7th place finish in the 2006 MSA point battle. Henes competed in 12 events between the MSA and ISMA. On the ISMA trail Henes finished 12th in the Sandusky Classic.

#22 Pat Lavery (OSW): 289 pts.

Pat also knocked down a 9th in the Shampine Memorial, a 5th in the Mr. Supermodified, and a 7th in the International Classic.

#23 Dave Trytek (ISMA): 285 pts.
Last Year: N/A

Trytek took the green in 15 ISMA features in 2006 behind the wheel of the Holbrook Racing #70. The #70 was the highest finishing of the three Holbrook entries coming home 8th in the season long ISMA point battle defeating teammate Bob Magner by just 1 single point. Trytek did not have a top5 finish all year but seemed to always finish, and was rather consistent. Despite poor classic finishes, 20th at both Star and Sandusky, Trytek had other good runs. Dave had an 8th place run at Mansfield in August, a 9th the night before the Hy-Miler, a 12th at Stafford in July, and most impressively a pair of 6th place finishes in the Twin 30's at Jennerstown in June.

#24 Jack Smith (MSA): 275 pts.
Last Year: #40
Head shot from www.supermodifiedscorecard.com

In ISMA competition, Smith had a 12th at Mansfield in August.

#25 Todd Stowell (OSW): 274 pts.
Last Year: #50

Stowell made quite a jump in the standings in 2006 from #50 all the way to #25. Todd and his #89 Extreme chassis were one of the 3 fastest cars at the track nearly every week, but the team couldn't quite put it all together for a feature win. The #89 came home 3rd in the Oswego standings, winning one hard charger award. The Extreme chassis was always knocking on the door step with a 3rd place finish in the Shampine Memorial 75, a 6th in the Independence 75, and a 6th in the Mr. Supermodified. Stowell competed in all 10 events at the Speedway in '06.

#27 Rob Summers (ISMA): 265 pts.
Last Year: N/A
Head Shot provided by Lane Racing

Summers made his debut in the supermodified division in 2006 and was very successful running 8 races for the potent Howie Lane team. Summers, who shared the #9 seat with a couple of drivers, finished 10th in the ISMA standings. Rob had a nice 7th place finish at Mansfield in August followed up with an 8th at Lee the following event. He then went to Star and finished 6th in the 41st Classic.

#28 Jerry Curran (OSW): 264 pts.
Last Year: N/A

#30 AJ Russell (WSSRL): 261 pts.
Last Year: #47
Photo From AJ Russell

Russell ran 9 events on the left coast in 2006. Russell ended the 2006 WSSRL campaign in the runner-up spot using a string of second place finishes through mid-summer to his advantage. AJ took 2nd at Rocky Mountain on July 4, then again at Shasta on July 15, and one more time at Madera the following race. In last seasons top50 Reid finished #46 and Russell #47. This season they are in line again, only further up the list!

#31 Rich Reid (MSA): 258 pts.
Last Year: #46

Reid, and the Joe Gillingham #55, ran 13 events in 2006 while picking up his first career supermodified feature victory. #34 Bob Bond (OSW): 255 pts.
Last Year: #7

Bond is still trying to win his first supermodified feature, and didnt have much luck in 2006. Bob had an unfortunate accident on opening day which sidelined him, but he did bounce back to make every show after that. Bond ended the season 7th in the Oswego Standings, twice being named the up and comer. 2007 may be Bond's best chance at a victory as he has ordered an Extreme Chassis for this season.

#35 Greg Furlong (OSW): 244 pts.
Last Year: #3

Furlong only ran 6 super events in 2006 after starting the year in the Paternoster Racing #41 Silver Crown car. Furlong ran into bad luck for much of the season, being in several accidents, but it all came together Classic Weekend. Greg set a blistering track record in time trials, then paced himself to his 3rd Classic tile in a row and 5th all-time putting him in a tie with Eddie Bellinger for 2nd lifetime.

#36 Johnny Pickard (ERA): 234 pts.
Last Year: N/A

Pickard ended the 2006 ERA season on fire. In the month of September, Pickard sailed under the checkered flag at Colorado National twice, winning the final two events of the year including the season finale high point event. Even more impressively Pickard only ran four races in 2006, bringing home top5's in each. Pickard ended the ERA season 4th in the #02.

#37 Kyle Carpenter (ISMA): 226 pts.
Last Year: #17
head shot provided by Lane Racing

Carpenter ran 12 races with ISMA in 2006 driving for Howie Lane and Jeff Holbrook. Kyle "The Smile" ended the season with two top5 finishes on the ISMA circuit.

#38 Timmy Snyder (OSW): 224 pts.
Last Year: #13

Tim Snyder came into 2006 searching for his first Oswego Speedway track championship. Unfortunately, health concerns forced Snyder out of the seat in his family owned Hawk #0, handing the wheel off to Joe Gosek. Snyder only ran 6 of the 10 races at the Speedway but certainly made his mark. The "Zero Hero" still managed a 14th in the standings, winning the Hard Charger award twice, and picking up a feature win on June 17.

#39 HJ Evans (ERA): 220 pts.
Last Year: N/A

#40 Kirk Wartman (WSSRL): 219 pts.
Last Year: N/A
Photo provided by Lance Menke Photos
head shot provided by Susan Wartman

Kirk Wartman ran one fewer race than Silsby, Veenstra, and Birges with the WSSRL but still managed a 6th in the series standings. Wartman ran 7 races and finished in the top5 in every one of them behind the wheel of both the #28 and the #96. Wartman's best finish was a 3rd in the Diamond Cup.

#41 Eric Silsby (WSSRL): 219 pts.
Last Year: N/A
Photo provided by Lance Menke Photos

Silsby ended the WSSRL campaign 5th in the standings just behind Rick Veenstra. Silsby and his #66 finish ahead of Veenstra in the countdown based on his two 3rd place finishes, and a big runner-up score to Regier at Madera.

#42 Rick Veenstra (WSSRL): 209 pts.
Last Year: N/A
Photo provided by Lance Menke Photos

Veenstra came home 4th in the WSSRL standings in his #91 machine. Veenstra brought home several top5 finishes including a 2nd to Troy Regier at Rocky Mountain Raceway. On June 3rd the #91 came across the line 5th in the coveted Diamond Cup at Meridian Speedway.

#43 Jim Birges (WSSRL): 209 pts.
Last Year: N/A
Photo provided by Lance Menke Photos

Birges ran 8 events on the west coast this season, and is the first WSSRL driver on our list as we count down to #1. Birges opened the season with a runner-up in his #32 to Jeff Russell at Madera on May 6th, but unfortunately he would have only one more top5 after that, a 4th at Rocky Mountain Raceway. Birges ended the season 7th in the WSSRL standings.

#44 John Torrese (ISMA): 208 pts.
Last Year: N/A

John Torrese returned to supermodified racing in 2006 in a big way competing in 15 events between ISMA and Oswego. Torrese started the year in the Graham C&C chassis before the Hawk #91 was completed for the remainder of the year. At Oswego, Torrese finished 15th in the Mr. Supermodified and a disapointing 33rd in the Classic. However, he did time into the show after failing to qualify for the event the past two years. The Miami, Florida native finished 17th in the year long ISMA point battle.

#45 Craig Rayvals (OSW): 207 pts.
Last Year: #31

"Hollywood" competed in 11 supermodified events in 2006, only missing one race at the Oswego Speedway. The Canadian shoe ended the season 9th in the Oswego standings with a 5th in the Shampine Memorial 75-lapper and a 12th in the Oswego Classic. The Stingray team also strapped on a wing twice. Once at Oswego for the Supernationals, and again at Thompson for the World Series.

#46- Steve Gioia III (OSW) 202 points:
2005 ranking- N/A

Were Steve Gioia able to run the entire Oswego schedule he would have been the Speedways Rookie of the Year. Unfortunately, Gioia had to give up his Graham Racing ride a couple of times in the season, forcing him to run only 8 of the 10 Speedway events in 2006. When Gioia did run he was very impressive in the familiar #9. He finished the year 13th overall in the standings with an outstanding 11th place finish in his first Oswego Classic, an 8th in the $10,000 to win event, and another 8th in the Shampine Memorial. Those three High Point events put Gioia into the top50 this season. Gioia had a 9th place average finish in the three High Point races he ran, which is likely right at the top of any driver on this list.

#47- Brandon Bellinger (ISMA) 194 points:
2005 ranking- #30

Bellinger decided to make the move to ISMA for 2006 and in doing so became the '06 rookie of the year in the series. Brandon ended the year 18th overall in the ISMA standings, running a grand total of 13 events in 2006 including the 2006 International Classic. Bellinger timed into the Classic for the 2nd straight year, but ran into problems in the 200-lap grind with a DNF. Belliner rode to a 16th in the Sandusky Classic, and a fine 9th in the Star Classic all behind the wheel of the Groves Racing #02. As of now Bellinger is out of the #02 for 2007, but certain rumors have Bellinger placed in something new next season.

#48- Rich Castor (ERA) 189 points:
2005 ranking- N/A

Rich Castor ran six ERA events, including one WSSRL race in 2006. Castor finished in the top5 in every ERA event, including a 5th in the season finale Classic event. With those fine runs Castor went on to be the 2006 ERA Supermodified point Champion!

#49- Joe Gosek (OSW) 187 points:
2005 ranking- #12

Mighty Joe got a late start to the season, only competing in 7 events through the year with both Oswego and ISMA. Joe got the call to drive the potent Snyder Racing #0 when Tim Snyder was sidelined for the year. Gosek promptly drove the car to a feature win at Oswego on August 12th, and then finished 2nd to Otto Sitterly in the $10,000 to win event August 26th. Gosek ended the season with a vicious ride into the wall in the Oswego Supernationals qualifying events. He was ok, but the Snyder #0 was destroyed. Joe qualified well for the Oswego Classic, but had pickup problems relegating him to a 14th place finish.

#50- Keith Shampine (OSW) 180 points:
2005 ranking- #48

In 2006 Keith and family decided to make the move to car owners purchasing the former Witkum #85. It took Shampine much of the early season to get the bugs worked out, but toward mid year the #85 was a threat for the top5 every week at Oswego. Shampine time trialed 7th for the International Classic, but broke an axel in the event. Shampine ended the year 6th in the Oswego standings with two top5 finishes. Unfortunately Keith had a DNF 14th in the Shampine Memorial, and a DNF 29th in the Classic which cost him valuable points. Keith ran all 10 races at Oswego, and also failed to qualify for the Oswego ISMA Supernationals at Oswego in a Steve Miller entry.
